It’s no secret that you can buy pretty much everything online these days. Although the physical car purchase doesn’t happen quite as often as phone cases, it’s crystal clear that the internet has affected the industry. The Good: Access to Information We’re now a simple Google search away from a wealth of information the moment we decide – “Hey, it’s time to look for a new or used car.” And that’s exactly what we’re doing. According to a 2016 survey by Cox Automotive, 88% of car buyers surveyed were using the internet during the purchase process, with the average car buyer spending 59% of their time researching and shopping around online. Why wouldn’t we arm ourselves with all this information? But, how do we use it effectively? Lets talk about how it can be done : The Where & The Who to Buy From We’re not really talking about private sales here. Don’t put too much trust in Mr. Tommy Trader online or dealer ads that show only “beauty shots” of a clean and shiny car from 10 feet away – in just the right shade of red you’ve been dreaming about. Try your best to take your heart out of the game. Yes, you should know what makes and models that get your engine revving, but always remember it’s what’s on the inside that counts (something you don’t often see online). There are other car-buying resources out there (some publicly accessible, some not), including national leasing companies and auction sites that have professional third-party inspectors who compile detailed reports on every lease return or used car that passes through.
